Fear of the unknown

We constantly faced with situations in our lives where we have to change something or do something unusual and new, but fear of the unknown keeps us from acting too much.

Most people, especially young people, are constantly concerned about the future, and some even fear it.

In fact, everyone asks questions like: What is in future for us?
Will I make my dreams come true? Can I face all the obstacles that come my way? What about my personal life?

Many people resist trying new things for fear of the unknown. This reveals a feeling of weakness in our personality.

Some studies indicate that we fear an unknown outcome more than a known bad outcome.

People are not afraid when they do familiar things, as they did before, and expect certain results. For example, when we drink alcohol, we know what to expect: it can lead to excessive alcohol consumption causing severe headaches the next day or alcoholism which can lead to cirrhosis later in life.

However, to come back to the question of why people are afraid to try new things, it is because we often do not have enough information and we connect the unknown with danger.

Fear of change

Many psychologists believe that people fear failure more than they fear what awaits in front of them.

Some psychologists say that fear of change is often associated with a person’s inability to think independently. For example, if someone constantly consults with family and friends before doing something, it will be difficult for them to make a decision for themselves in the future because they will be afraid of doing something wrong.

However, life is unpredictable and resilient, so if we do not get rid of the fear of the future, we cannot become the true owner of our destiny. Courage and determination help us to overcome difficult situations and thus become stronger and more confident.

“You’re afraid of failing and doing something new, which is so natural. To do important things, you have to overcome that,” said Larry Page, co-founder of Google, who spoke about the early days of his business. .

Just try to understand that flaws or mistakes are not always bad. You have to agree that most of the best life lessons are learned by making mistakes, and these lessons are often not learned if life goes well.

Comfort Zone

Some psychologists suggest that to overcome fear of the unknown or the future, you need to get out of your “comfort zone”. The comfort zone is a psychological state that provides a feeling of well-being, comfort and security.

The idea of the comfort zone dates back to a classic psychology experiment in 1908, by psychologists Robert Yrex and John Dodson. They explained that the state of relative comfort creates a constant level of performance. However, to maximize performance, we need a state of relative anxiety, that is, an area where our stress levels are slightly above normal.

But how do you get out of your comfort zone? Getting out of there takes a lot of courage, so start with something easy.

For example, do daily chores differently each day, talk to a stranger, try a new restaurant, or use a different way of working.

Making quick decisions can also help. Some people feel more comfortable by comparing all the possible options several times. However, in many cases, quick decisions will teach you to trust your judgment.
