Kadoo aur dal (bottlegourd and split bengal gram)

Bottlegourd and split bengal gram curry is a traditional dish. Bottlegourd is a vegetable, readily available during summer season. Bottle gourd is available in different shapes and sizes. Bottlegourd is very healthy vegetable and by adding chana dal in it, You get an amazing flavours of dal and healthy vegetable altogether.

Ingredients

1/2 kg kadoo, thinly chopped
2 medium sized onion, chopped
3 green chillies
1 tomato, chopped
1 inch ginger piece
7-8 cloves of garlic
3/4 cup of split bengal gram (chana dal), soaked overnight
2 tsp of crushed coriander seeds
1/2 cup of cooking oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
1&1/2 tsp red chilli powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup water
Fresh coriander leaves
1 tsp garam masala

Procedure

1. In a pressure cooker, add cooking oil and preheat oil on medium heat. Add cumin seeds and fry for a minute.Add onions and cook it on medium heat until get golden colour from sides.

2. Meanwhile take ginger, garlic, green chillies and crushed coriander seeds and grind well. Set aside. Add a splash of water and mix well. Add salt, red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Mix well.

3. Add already ground paste of ginger garlic paste and mix well. Cook well until raw flavour of garlic goes off and ground mixture cooked completely.

4. Add chopped tomatoes and mix well. Add some water and mix well. Cover the lid and let the tomatoes to soft. Cook for about 5 minutes.

5. Add soaked dal in the pressure cooker and mix well. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes till oil separates out of it. Add kadoo and cook for 3-4 minutes.

6. Add 1 cup of water or as much as you want, stir it well. Close the lid and let the whistle to blow. (Caution:Read your pressure cooker manual carefully before using it, here it is just a guide as every pressure cooker settings are different).

7. Once whistle blows, let it be for 5 to 6 minutes. Turn off the flame and let the pressure cooker to low down the pressure on its own. After it settled down, about 15 to 20 minutes. Open the lid, add chopped fresh coriander and mix it well. Add garam masala and mix well. You are ready to serve.
