Sprinkles can be use in variety of ways. These are used to decorate cakes, muffins and donuts. It is often difficult to find them in some countries so it is helpful to have a recipe like this. It is very easy and only needs several hours to dry out completely. 18 to 24 hours are good to dry them completely. I have used red, yellow and plain white but you can make it with color of your own choice.
Ingredients:
1 cup of granulated sugar, finely ground it in food processor
1 tsp of egg whites
1 to 2 tsp of warm water
1/8 tsp of vanilla essence
Pinch of salt
Food coloring of your own choice
Procedure:
- In a bowl, add egg whites and with the help of whisk, beat the egg whites for 2 to 3 minutes. Then sift sugar and salt in egg whites in egg whites, this step is very important as sugar should be fine enough to pass through a piping bag. Leave out the remains of sugar from sieve.
- Mix the egg whites, sugar and salt, the mixture will looks like thick mixture. Add vanilla in it and stir the mixture well.
- Add half tsp of warm water at a time and stir it well. Add half more tsp of warm water as you need and stir well. Stir the mixture well until it gets a pour able consistency. It should not be very thick and not very thin. Be gentle in adding water and add water slowly.
- Now separate the mixture in separate three bowls and color them with the color of your own choice. I have used powdered color but if you are using liquid food coloring then add less water in the mixture. Stir the food color thoroughly in the mixture.
- Take separate piping bags and fill them. Set up a parchment paper on a surface and make a tiny hole at the end of piping bag. Pipe out it in straight lines on parchment paper. Repeat the process for all the colors.
- Let the lines dry overnight, it is necessary for them to dry out completely. They will come out from the paper as soon as they dry completely. Use knife to cut them in smaller pieces and your homemade sprinkles are ready.
