Well it comes to any type of dal(pulse), it is hard to develop taste and flavor in dal. Dals(pulses) are best when you want something simple to cook and don’t want to do a lot of hard work in chopping veggies and all. Moong dal is often cooked in our house. For good health eat every kind of food but keep it in moderation.
INGREDIENTS:
4 tbsp of vegetable oil
1 inch cube of fresh ginger
6 medium sized fresh cloves of garlic
2 large size green chilies
2 tsp of ground coriander powder
1 tbsp of red chili powder
¼ tsp of turmeric powder(optional)
½ tsp of salt
1 medium fresh tomato
1 ½ cup of water
½ cup of moong (split green gram) soaked for 2 to 3 hours
PROCEDURE:
1- Peel off ginger and garlic and rinse them well. Ground or mince them in a mortar and pestle along with coriander powder and green chilies. Ground them well. Texture should be roughly like a paste (you can use chopper or blender for that)
2- Roughly chop up tomato. Take a heavy bottom medium sized pan. Add vegetable oil in it. On medium heat warm up oil (Don’t heat up your oil too much otherwise you will burn your ginger and garlic paste). Then add your ginger and garlic paste.
3- Cook ginger and garlic until they are fully cooked and all the bits turned golden in color. keep on stirring. Add salt, red chili powder and turmeric powder.stir it for 1 to 2 minutes.
4- Add chopped tomatoes and ¼ cup of water. Stir and close the lid. Let tomatoes to fully cook. Keep an eye on them. After they softened try to break down a bit with the back of your spoon.
5- As tomatoes fully cooked the mixture will start separating from oil. At this stage add moong dal (split green gram) and stir well. Cook it for about 2 minutes and add remaining water in it. Close the lid and let the mixture comes to a boil.Once it comes to a boil let it simmer for about 30 to 40 minutes on low heat. (It really depends on your moong dal that how long it takes to cook, you can also add more water if it needs). After that if it is fully cooked, serve hot and enjoy.
